Volume One is Uploaded!
The Big Book of Spam, Volume One: Subject Lines has been uploaded to BookSurge, along with the book cover! After some additional editing that I hadn’t counted on, it’s finally uploaded and BookSurge can begin to go through it and make sure it meets all the publication criteria. I can’t say how quickly or slowly that process will go, but I’ve been told that it should be about two weeks, give or take.
On a related note, the Subject Line of the Week feature returns today! I’ll be publishing new Subject Lines of the Week every Friday, and the Spam of the Month feature will be making a comeback on September 1st.
Subject Line of the Week: August 1, 2008
Volume One News and Book Cover Sneak Peek
I just got off the phone with Nicole Briggs, one of my BookSurge account managers, and one of the nicest people I’ve dealt with on the phone lately.
Before a book can go on sale at a place like Amazon or Barnes & Noble, it needs an ISBN [wikipedia] number. The ISBN for The Big Book of Spam, Volume One has now been requested and should be assigned tomorrow! Once I get that number in my email, I can plug it into my copyright page, and upload the book files for review.
Once the book files are uploaded, BookSurge will check to make sure everything is formatted correctly, then send me an author review copy for approval. Assuming no changes need to be made, I’ll approve it and the book should be up for sale at Amazon in about two weeks!
Here’s a look at the book cover - click to enlarge:
It’s Done - The Big Book of Spam: Volume One, is Done
I have one task left, and that’s to complete the back of the book cover. The interior is 100%, not-going-to-change done. The book cover will, if all goes according to plan, be completed tomorrow morning (okay, later today, given that it’s 1:40a.m.).
I need to call my contact at BookSurge on Monday to ask about getting my ISBN number (which they give me), then it’s upload time. After that, the ball is in their court. They’re going to check my book files to make sure everything is formatted correctly, with all the images and fonts embedded and all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed. I’ll be asking Zach on Monday how long that typically takes and hopefully have an estimated purchase date to share!
It’s done!
Editing Complete!
Well, mostly complete. I find myself constantly moving things around, but all the subject lines, joke and images are in. I wrapped up the logo yesterday (which I’m really pleased with and you can see it here on the site now), and the book cover is just about finished. I’m still playing with the color scheme and some of the elements in the layout.
Work continues on the website, and I’m hoping to have the final files to upload to BookSurge very soon.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that although I’ve got all the content for this book ready to roll, I still want your spams! This is to be the first in a series, after all! Spam me at bbos@thebigbookofspam.com!
Finally, on the site management side of things, I’ve integrated Disqus to handle the commenting here. Ironically, I’ve done that to help cut down on spam - hey, the spam is for the books, not for you guys to wade through in the site comments. Disqus is a fantastic blog comment solution, supported by a ton of sites the world over.
First Print!
The first draft of The Big Book of Spam just rolled off my printer a few minutes ago. I’m entering the editing phase now! Publication is - hopefully - just a couple of weeks away now!
More Updates!
I’ve signed on with BookSurge for the publication of The Big Book of Spam! This is very exciting, as BookSurge is owned by Amazon, which will give The Big Book of Spam great exposure. I’ve got a few more jokes to write, and more graphics to add, but I’ve hit my page count goal of 175 with all the spam subject lines (over 300 of them!) plugged in.
Getting closer!
p.s. I’m going to resume the weekly Subject Line of the Week feature after the publication of the book, so it’ll be a little while longer.
Updates!
The Big Book of Spam site will be on hiatus for a little while (as you may have noticed from the lack of updates over the past month or so). I’m working on a few things - a redesign of the site and the publication of the first book! While I’m working on those, the regular Subject Line of the Week will be put on hold. Things should be wrapped up in about another month or so.
I’m still looking for spam! Send everything you’ve got to bbos@thebigbookofspam.com, and add that address to any spammer lists you feel like (although I’m not keen on the sex or stock tip lists - I get more than enough of those already).
Big stuff coming up!
